SPARKPLUGS. - So important. In a Thumper. In life.
FSSNOC #2296 - a long time member from the state of California - sends us the photo above via text to our club phone ... Thank You, Todd!

The one on the left is automotive. The middle one is motorcycle. On the right hand side is one that I picked up off the street. I have never seen a sparkplug with that many miles (!) of thread and such a long center electrode. It is an Autolite brand. I looked it up on their website, seems it may be used in various applications of trucks, including Jeep, Dodge, Chevy, and another brand that I don't recall. I didn't know Jeep made a truck? Of note, I also have a small collection of antique sparkplugs.
(REPLY) to Todd and members: Yo Todd! Good stuff! First of all, I'm happy to hear that someone else picks things up off the street! One finds the strangest things sometimes ... I come home with something on nearly every "walk around the neighborhood" that I go on and ... on my Thumper, I often go back to a gravel and micro-trash laden intersection to retrieve some wayward rusty bent nail, bolt, or some scrap of aluminum. In fact, I have a jar in my shed that is labeled "Nail Jail" where I put those recovered items in for sake keeping.
I bet Todd has something similar, eh, Todd?
As for sparkplugs ... how important are they. Very! Remove that plug and that motorbike isn't going to run well, or in the case of most Thumpers, run at all ... and so it goes with life, eh. We need those sparkplugs.
Best wishes, Todd - Thank You again! - Jack, #000

Rob from Minnesota sent us a few comments on Mitchell, SD. - the site of our upcoming in June ThumperCafe...
The bowling alley in Mitchell, S.D. is a great place for breakfast. So is Marlin's at the I-90 Truck Stop.
Motels? I stay at the Hampton, because the Comfort Inn has a water park. Expect to pay more because Mitchell is the only game on I-90 in Eastern S.D.
Also, when in Mitchell, one may want to make time for photos of the Corn Palace. All the exterior walls are murals done in "corn" seeds, tassels, stocks, leaves, etc.
Ruby Tuesday's have a great salad bar, is next to the Hampton. I haven't eaten at THE DEPOT but will plan to stop by and check it out prior to the ThumperCafe date.
Area Motels below:
Rodeway Inn
Motel 6 ... these two are older and cheaper.
Super 8
Budget Inn
Thunderbird Lodge
Coachlight
Days Inn
AmericInn
Quality Inn
Kelly Inn
Hampton Inn
Corn Palace Inn
Holiday Inn Express - rates may fluctuate depending on season and day of week. I suggest booking early. - Rob, #5186
WOW! Good stuff, Rob! Thank You!! - #000.

Hi Jack (000) and club members ... from sunny California,
Last Saturday I attended another BSA club ride in the Sierra Foothills. A couple of noteworthy thumpers attended. See attached photos. The weather was perfect for a motorcycle ride.
I don't have a BSA thumper so I rode my 1966 BSA Lightning (2-cylinders). I was having a great ride until my motor quit. I eventually got rescued.

(REPLY to ALAN and other viewers of this update ... from #000)
Hi Ya, Alan ... Hey, it looks like no one else in FSSNOC-land went anywhere on their Thumper last week, 'cept you and me ... we are the lucky ones, eh? See the Event Page for my own ride report.
Let my insert to those viewers/readers here at the ThumperGarage today that our site's invitation to send details about your ride that was issued in last week's update was/is definitely not limited to a group gathering, in fact, quite honestly, nearly all of my own miles are solo miles or perhaps in the company of one other rider.
My own personal riding creed would surely include; "Wait not on the perfect day, lest the perfect day escape me..." and I could change that to some version of ... "I wait not on an invite from another to ride my own Thumper, lest a perfect day escape me!" And, that "perfect day" may and often does include imperfect weather, etc. The realization that is was indeed a "perfect day" often comes after the fact, after the ride, as I approach my slowly opening overhead shed door (yup, it's electric! I am so spoiled!).
I have also succumbed to another "modern-times" thing ... Carrie can track me on her cellphone should I run late which often happens, though I do try to be home by sundown via the earlier day coaching of one Joseph Lucas, 1834-1902.
Alan, I note by the background details in your photo above, the group must gather at a shopping mall in the city. Those lovely old-timey machines look kinda out-of-place amongst all the modern vehicles, huh? Beautiful.
The BSA in the photo above is, at least to my eye, maybe a 1967-1968 441cc Thumper, the road/street version of the more prevalent BSA 441 Scrambler with the yellow/alloy gas tank. I also noted with a smile, perhaps a bit of wayward vibration has re-angled the headlight on that Shooting Star?
This Shooting Star version used a more "modernistic" for the day sculptured fiberglass tank. This example looks like a very accurate, perhaps not even "restored", maybe an original, what do they call those, a survivor? ... either way, it is a treat to the eye, for sure!
Thank You, Alan - for sharing your day with us. I noticed in the upper left hand of the photo, a twin-cylinder BSA, could that be your Lightning 650cc, by chance?
See you up the road... (check out the other pages of this site...)
